The Aldo Leopold Nature Center’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its walls. From the building’s orientation to stormwater management and native landscaping, the site itself has been thoughtfully designed to work in harmony with the surrounding environment.
Building Orientation:
Before construction began, careful planning ensured the building was positioned to capture as much sunlight as possible. This orientation allows solar panels to operate at maximum efficiency while increasing natural daylight inside the facility. By aligning the structure with the sun’s path, the design reduces the need for artificial lighting and supports greater solar energy production.
Rain Gardens:
Heavy storms once caused significant runoff from the wooded drumlin, leading to trail erosion and washouts near the building. The updated site design now directs this water into a series of rain gardens. These gardens are designed to slow, capture, and absorb rainwater while naturally filtering runoff before it reaches surrounding ecosystems. Planted with native species that thrive in wet conditions, the rain gardens demonstrate how natural systems can provide effective and sustainable solutions.
